Devlog #1 - The origin of Knight George

Hello everyone!

Welcome to the first Knight George devlog, which will be a regular thing at the end of each month. Their content will vary from month to month, from behind the scenes to news about the current status of development of the game! And let's start off by the beginning: how did Knight George came to be?

Most of you will be surprised to learn that Knight George was already featured in a game of the same name (now renamed "Knight George [Legacy]") 9 years ago! I did a short rogue-lite game back then for a rogue-lite competition that lasted 3 months, and as I always enjoyed the aesthetics of the Game Boy, I decided to give it a try with this project!

Using a base idea I actually saw in a dream once of a Knight going through rooms and fighting dragons (although the game I saw that night looked more like a mix of an calculator game and a LCD game), I made a game in which you start by selecting one of 6 weapons and one of 6 magic spells and then fight your way all the way to the top of a tower to face... Feli'Seth and free Prince Philip! George was however initially named Simon, and the folder containing the game project and all the assets on my computer is still listed as "Knight Simon"...

Each floor was procedurally generated from a small pool of possible rooms, and you got a new randomly-picked weapon/magic and a new heart container after defeating a boss before moving on to the next floor.

I loved making this small game back then, and I immediately thought: "One day, I'll make an A-RPG with this universe!".

Skip to 2018. I was putting the finishing touches to a fangame project I had going since the end 2013 to finally wrap it up after cutting much content (a tough experience but that actually taught me a lot), and I wanted to start a new project. Knight George came back to mind, and I decided to give myself a month to see what idea I could find to make the game interesting and how to expand of the little lore I had back then. This was a totally new experience for me as I tended, like many gamedevs, to jump straight to prototyping without really knowing where I was heading, but I really liked it. I wrote down story ideas, objects (most of them are still present or planned to be) and even reused some bosses from the first Knight George game that I thought were cool and original!

A month later, I was decided: Knight George would be my new project, and possibly my first ever commercial game! It was time to finally boot up Game Maker and start prototyping the engine...
